Drum Circle Music : About the Training

About the Training

Effective • Flexible • Powerful

Drum Circle Music (DCM) is a comprehensive approach to facilitating group music making that makes it easy to present enriching, dynamic and educational rhythm-based activities for groups of all kinds. Developed by Orff-Schulwerk Practitioner, Drum Circle Facilitator and Master Percussionist, Kalani, DCM makes it easy for anyone to create memorable events that enchant, excite, and inspire.

DCM is an effective way to help people enjoy expressing themselves, listening with their whole body, working together towards a common goal, and sharing their creative and collective spirits through active play.

DCM training is presented in multiple levels that support the student through a process of skill and knowledge development.

The books, DVD, web-site and live training courses offer multiple levels of support that make learning and applying the Drum Circle Music approach both accessible and effective.

Certification Overview

Certification is a process that is unique to each Participant. Someone who attends a DCM training, may elect to seek Certification.
A person who is making a conscious effort to meet the requirements of certification is referred to as a Practitioner (DCMP). Because certification is based on performance, and not attendance, every Practitioner has the freedom and flexibility to move at his/her own pace.

Once a Practitioner feels that he/she has fulfilled all the requirements for certification, he/she contacts his/her Trainer to become a Candidate. Candidates attend DCM Training Programs where their skills, knowledge and abilities are assessed by a Trainer. Candidates who meet all certification criteria receive Drum Circle Music Certification and the status, DCMF (Drum Circle Music Facilitator)

DCMFs that wish to deepen their practice may elect to seek the status of Trainer (DCMT)

Drum Circle Music Certification requires each students to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and competencies in several areas. Those areas fall into four main categories:

Music Movement Process Programs

A Certified DCM Facilitator is someone who:

• has all the skills, knowledge, strategies, and ability to create meaningful rhythm-based events using the DCM approach

• can demonstrate the playing and use a variety of World Percussion instruments

• is able to demonstrate a variety of movement qualities and link them to musical and community models.

• is able to demonstrate knowledge and ability to use spoken word, chants, poem and songs in a group setting.

• is able to facilitate a developmental group process, self-teaching and authentic learning through music and movement.

• is able to design and implement variety of programs for different populations, and show how those programs produce results.

• loves their work.

Certification Requirements

How will DCM certification help me?
