Drum Circle Music : Levels Requirements

Certification Requirements

The DCM certification process honors each student's unique abilities and needs. Kalani Music grants Certification not on the number or type of training programs attended, but on the knowledge, skills, experience and performance of each participant. The following outlines the path to Certification.

Participant

Everyone begins the DCM experience as a Participant. DCM is a unique approach to individual and group development that incorporates multiple disciplines and practices. Those with experience in one area, drumming or music education for example, will be able to focus on other areas, while those with little or no drumming or music-making experience may need more time to become proficient in all areas.

Practitioner

A Drum Circle Music Practitioner (DCMP) is someone who has completed at least one DCM training and is working towards certification. Each Practitioner works at his/her own pace. Some may take several years to meet the criteria in each area.
Not every participant chooses to become a Practitioner. Many attend multiple programs simply for the enrichment and to connect with the many people in the DCM community.

Candidate

A Practitioner who has met all the prerequisites for certification is a Candidate. Candidates attend Certification Programs to complete their training under the supervision of a DCM Trainer. During supervision, a Candidate is required to demonstrate competencies through a variety of assessment tools. These may include written and verbal tests, various practicum, and performance evaluations.

Certified DCM Facilitator

A Candidate who completes the certification process achieves the status of Drum Circle Music Facilitator (DCMF). DCMFs are entitled to special resources and benefits, including job referrals, listing on the DCM web site, personal support, and special discounts on select products and programs.

The Process

Certification involves meeting the criteria for each area of the training process and approval from the Trainer. Certification criteria are provided to all Practitioners upon request.

DCM Training addresses each of the following areas:

  • Drumming Skills and Knowledge
  • Rhythm, and Timing
  • Musical Forms and Treatments
  • Movement and Dance
  • Rhythmic Speech
  • Visual Arts
  • Verbal and Non-verbal Communication
  • Presentation Skills
  • Facilitation and Social Skills
  • Group Management Strategies
  • Program Design and Application
  • Group Discussion and Debriefing
  • Rhythm Games and Drum Circle Activities

DCMFs who wish to deepen their practice may apply to work with Kalani Music to reach the status of Trainer.

Trainer

A DCM Trainer is someone who demonstrates consistent mastery in all areas, is committed to growing the DCM movement and community of facilitators, and is skilled in presenting DCM training programs.

FAQ

- How long will it take to become certified as a Drum Circle Music Facilitator?

An education in DCM is like taking a college-level course that requires the student to show competency through written, verbal, and demonstrated evaluations. All students must complete all the requirements in each of the four areas. For some, this may take several months. For others, it may take a few years.

- Can I get extra credit if I already have training in related areas?

Certification is based on the ability of each student to demonstrate his/her understanding and competency in practicing the principles of DCM. Related training can certainly help in reaching that goal.

- Can I get certified at my first training program?

No. All Candidates must first complete the certification requirements, which includes facilitating a number of events using the DCM approach. The minimum number of Training Programs for certification is two. Many people come to several as part of their training.

- Is the Training Program only for musicians or can any attend?

Anyone can attend - even people who are new to music. Formal music training is not required, just a love for music, movement and people. We show you how to use the instruments and how to help others make music together - without a formal music education.

- What are the benefits of Certification?

As a DCMF, you will have the option of being included in our job referral program, listed on the DCM web site, and you will receive discounts on future programs, retreats and select products. Most importantly, you will know that you have achieved a high level of skill.

- Is DCM Training the same as drum circle facilitation training?

While DCM does meet all the requirements for effective drum circle facilitation, it reaches into many other areas of expressive arts and helps to integrate them into a cohesive practice and unique approach. Students with drum circle facilitation training and experience will add to their existing skills by studying DCM.
